A Bullroarer is a sacred object in Australian Aboriginal culture, made of a thin, flat piece of wood suspended from a string. When whirled, it produces a low, whirring sound that is used in sacred ceremonies for various purposes, such as a "voice of a great ancestral spirit," warning off the uninitiated, and expressing feelings of friendship. The sound is also believed to ward off evil spirits.
